Author Event – Quentin Casey

Quentin Casey, author of Joshua Slocum is in store Friday, July 11th!

The first person to circumnavigate the globe alone, Captain Joshua Slocum has remained a nautical icon since the publication of Sailing Alone Around the World in 1900.

In Joshua Slocum, journalist Quentin Casey takes readers from the treasured sea captain’s humble upbringing on Westport, Brier Island, through his lifelong quest for adventure on the sea. Follow Slocum’s career from ordinary seaman to master of celestial navigation, and experience a rare look into his personal life, trouble on and off the sea, and his mysterious disappearance.

Author Event – Julie Pellissier-Lush

Join us as author Julie Pellissier-Lush speaks on her work, “My Mi’kmaq Mother” at the Tyne Valley Public Library on Thursday, July 3rd at 7:00 p.m.

My Mi’kmaq Mother is a flavourful account of a young Mi’kmaq girl’s life without her Mi’kmaq mother. Searching for the essence of a mother she barely had a chance to know, the reader is drawn into the world of the Mi’kmaq people. Written about the past but with a modern sensibility, the writer’s unique approach brings meaning, warmth, and even humour to the challenges and joys of everyday life.

Author Event – Richard Gwyn

Join us Saturday, May 31st as Canadian historian, author and political commentator Richard J. Gwyn delivers a free public lecture on the topic of “Sir John A. Macdonald and the Charlottetown Conference 1864.

Richard J Gwyn is the author of two recent best selling books on Sir John A. Macdonald— John A: The Man who Made Us, Volume One: 1815-1867 (2008) and Nation Maker: Sir John A. Macdonald: His Life, Our Times, Volume Two: 1867-1891 (2011), both being sold at the event.

Hackmatack is Back!

The Hackmatack Children’s Choice Book Award is back for its 15th season with an exciting selection of Canadian books for young readers in Grades 4, 5 and 6. The list includes a total of 40 outstanding reads in the categories of English and French fiction and non-fiction.

For home or school these titles are available at Bookmark!

Hackmatackers have already cast their votes for their favourite books, and the awards will be presented at a ceremony at the Confederation Centre for the Arts in Charlottetown, PEI on Friday May 30!

Atlantic Book Awards Festival – Week 2

The Atlantic Book Awards and Festival is on-going!
Be sure to check out all of the events before it ends with the big gala on May 21st!

Tuesday, May 20th @ 7pm: Join non-fiction writers John Flood, Earle Lockerby, and Pan Wendt for a panel discussion at the UPEI Faculty Lounge.

Wednesday, May 21st @ 12pm: Terry Graff presents his book ‘Masterworks from the Beaverbrook Art Gallery” at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery.

@ 2pm: Jesse Francis and A.J.B. Johnston present their book “Ni’n na L’nu: The M’ikmaq of Prince Edward Island” at the Confederation Centre Public Library.

@ 7pm at the Delta Prince Edward Island join the celebration as winners are announced for each of the Atlantic Book Awards!

The 2014 Atlantic Book Awards Festival is starting up next week!

Wednesday, May 14th, sit in as Paul Bowdring reads from his new novel, The Stranger’s Gallery. 7pm at Mavor’s, Charlottetown.

Thursday, May 15th, the PEI Book Award (fiction) Finalists Patti Larsen, Keir Lowther, and Richard Lemm come together for a discussion at the Confederation Centre Public Library at 7pm.
